TAX BILLING PROCESS:
Current tax bills are
created and mailed in early December of each year. This tax is on the assessed value of property, which was
existing, as of January 1st of that
year. The County creates the bills for
all municipalities except the City of Manitowoc, and the City of Two Rivers.
(They create and collect their own taxes until July 31st.) Once the County has
printed the tax bills, they are given to the local treasurer to mail and take
collections on. The local treasurer
will take collection on the taxes until January 31st. We will not know which current tax parcels are paid, until we
settle with each municipality after January 31st. These records are then updated when we have settled with each
municipality. (This is usually
completed by the middle of February.)
The County is responsible
for collecting the second installment, and delinquent taxes after January
31st. (Except for the City of Manitowoc,
and the City of Two Rivers.) The second
installment is due by July 31st, and payable to the County Treasurer. If a taxpayer missed the January 31st due
date, the tax is then delinquent and subject to a 1 percent per month interest,
until it is paid in full. The amount
will show on our screen in red. You
will need to call our office to receive a payoff amount. The two installment option will no longer
apply. We do accept partial payment
amounts. You do not need to pay the
full amount, if you are delinquent. By
paying partial payments, you will lessen the total amount of interest you pay
overall.
